Peer Pressure

I got pressured in to painting a few weeks back by some friends so I took an old outline thinking I could either freestyle something or rock a silver with the old sketch. When I started putting up the outline I had mixed feelings about it because, although it was coming out well, it still looked a little too familiar in my eyes. So I freestyled about half of the sketch (not something I usually like to do) along with most of the arrows and doodads. I then shot a photo and made a print on paper where I could make even more adjustments that I eventually made on the wall as well. This was the first time I've tried this type of workflow and I might try it again in the future.

Graff Canvas/Mixed Media Workshops

I'm going to run a four week workshop on mixed media graffiti canvases. I copied and pasted some info below for those who might be interested.

-Limited to 20 students so early enrollment is encouraged.

-First come first serve enrollment, however, must be able to commit and attend all four weeks of the workshop.

-Students will learn techniques for creating their own graffiti canvas or mixed media paintings. 1 - 16" x 20" Canvas will be provided for accepted and enrolled students.

-Some supplies will be provided but attendees are encouraged to bring their own supplies as well such as Paint Markers, Acrylics, Paint Brushes, Pencils, Erasers, Painters Masking Tape, exacto Knives, and old newsprint.

The shirt was produce by WST around 2002 or 2003. I started the skate board deck in spring of 2010 in the hopes of having it ready for the WST Art show in Eureka last April. Needless to say I didn't meet the deadline and this project was placed on the shelf for quite some time as I wasn't happy with the lack of pop on the fill. A few weeks ago I got my hands on an airbrush and I was finally able to add the contrast that I felt the fill needed. From there it was just a matter of hitting the outline again and fine lining in the webbing with metallic acrylic paint.

Here is a quick clip from a Mural project by Writer'z Blok team of Sake, Izze, Daze, Bean and Arest 150. We had to pull a few all nighters towards the end of the project to even appear to be close to finishing because we were behind schedule due to all the hours dedicated to making the Contents Under Pressure show a success. Sake and Daze completeed their parts of the graffiti sections in the wee hours of Thursday morning. The panels were installed to the mural later that morning. Special thanks from myself to Sake, Daze, Bean, Serg, Vapor, Spic, Boogie, Give, Take, Arest 150, Alexander, and the SDMA Security Staff for all the hard work and support.

San Diego Museum of Art X Writer'z Blok

Writer'z Blok has been working with the San Diego Museum of Art for the last year or so and was recently contracted to paint a large scale mural inside hall 15. Considering the museum houses masterpieces by famous artists including Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali the museum staff decided against letting us spray paint indoors due to concerns that paint might circulate through the ventilation. Instead, we decided that any sections which required spray paint would be on wooden panels outside which we would then install to the mural. I recommended to WB that they bring in Saratoga Sake as the lead on the project as I felt his skill set as both a graffiti and fine artist was a perfect match. Fortunately, Sake was not only interested but enthusiastic at the opportunity and immediately got to work putting together a mock up utilizing various pieces from their upcoming Modern Mexican exhibit. As of now we are about midway through the second week of painting and hopefully on pace to finish by the dedication which is scheduled for December 8th.Check out the San Diego Museum of Art's page dedicated to the Writer'z Blok mural.

Daze and I teamed up with Sake to rock a couple of panels for the Writer'z Blok section at the Arts and Culture Fest. Sake took the lead on this one and rocked some simple letters and character outlines on both panels on the night before the event. DazeRoc and I arrived a little before noon on the day of the event and started working come color ful fills on the letters. Sake showed up a little later and got to work immediately. Together, we were able to knock out both panels. This particular panel was done by Sake and DazeRoc. I need to go back for a better flick of the other since it was getting dark when we finished.

Bean, and I went down to Tijuana to rep Writer'z Blok at a local skate/graff event. We were given 5 cans of Ironlak and 5 cans of cheap auto paint and assigned spots. They didn't really want letters but I figured they wouldn't mind if I did it in a colorful manner. So I free-styled this piece on the spot in a reasonable amount of time... for once.

While daze put some finishing touches on his piece and background I worked on finishing the piece but I still have to finish my part of the rock background. I probably should have chosen better colors for the plasma cloud behind my piece but I didn't realize it until I had already used a lot of paint. Gotta try and have this one done by Monday...

So we found out about a week ahead of time that the annual Battlegrounds event was going to take place. I didn't have a lot of time to prepare so I used an outline that I had previously done on the canvas at the top of this post. Daze was unable to make it out due to prior obligations so it was just Sake, Zone, and myself. The weather was perfect: not too hot, not too cold. But I still realized when I got home that both of my forearms were completely fried from being in the sun all day. I guess that will serve as a reminder need to get some good sunblock for the rest of the Summer. Overall great day painting with the crew. Shout out to Give who helped me with some fill in work. After finishing around 8:30 at night I left and got home just in time to catch the Pacquiao/Moseley fight. Manny's unstoppable.

New production we did last weekend before Baske had to skip town for a week in Hawaii. I freestyled my outline this time because I didn't have any sketches ready to go. Usually I don't like the results when I don't come with a solid plan but I thought this one came out decent. It does look similar to a recent outline I've used so I tried to mix it up a little with the design elements in the fill.

I had painted this same outline back in October at Just Blaze in Phoenix but decided to give it another shot when Pesa was in town last weekend and I needed an outline to paint. I think it came out a little better this time since I had a little more space to work with.

Our fellow crew member Pesa submitted the outline for this new design back in the Spring. I started working on it around June or July and finished the design in October though I hardly worked on it every day. I would work on it a little here, and a little there where time permitted until late September when I really started focusing on getting it completed. Due to all the amount of overlapping lines and the complexity of the letters this design was a monumental task and I often referred to it as a "nightmare" as I was in the process of working on it. I tell my friends that if I only did this for money that I'd never spend the time that I do to complete one of these projects. From the initial sketch, to scanning, line work, coloring, layout, color separations, to screen printing a lot of heart and soul goes in to one of these designs. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the way it came out both on the screen and how it eventually printed on both the Tees and Hoodies. Both are available on the Wild Style Technicians online store now.

This design is the second installation of our new WST Artist Series which will all feature full out Wild Style Burners on front and the artist signature on the back.

I had hit up East DF ATT through Kuaze a while back to see if he'd be interested in doing a design for WST sometime. He was and although it's been a while we finally got it all together and the final product should drop officially next week. Other than some minor tweaking I really didn't have to make any changes which was great for a change. This is going to be one of our new "Artist Series" line of tees where we hand pick artists we like to rock a "Wild Style" piece/design. As of now we have really dope submissions from East, Pesa, Sphere, and Zone. All will feature the "WST Artist Series" logo with the artists signature on the back of the tee. Just Blaze - Phoenix, AZ

DazeRoc and I made a trip to Phoenix on the weekend of October 2nd and 3rd to paint and do some promo for the business at a store called Just Blaze. The owner, Erni, had invited us a few times to come out so we could have a little jam and get some painting in. We finally had a break in our schedule and made it out. We had a good time and Erni and his crew took great care of us.

"Hip Hop" Piece

The "Welcome to Arroyo's" play is changing locations so they needed a new backdrop which would work with the new stage. So Bean, Geos, Risk and I did a few quick greyscale pieces of words they requested we paint. I did freestyled a "Hip Hop" piece on the bottom middle of the back drop. Bean did a "Roots" piece to the right and Risk did a "Flow" piece to the left. About 15 feet above these Geos did a "Love", "Peace" and then he and Risk both did a "Struggle" piece all while working on a hydraulic lift. The guy who works at the location said the material we were painting on costs $25,000. I guess it's a special material used to project movies or images and they hadn't been using it so someone decided it would be okay to paint for the play. Crazy...

Molly Piece - Welcome to Arroyos

I apologize to anyone who saw my previous post and bought in to it. I actually painted this "Molly" piece for an upcoming play called "Welcome to Arroyo's". They had us do a stop frame animation photography while painting so basically I would paint a few lines then step out of the frame so the could take a photo. I ended up having to do that a few thousand times over the course of painting the piece which was different but if the animation comes out nice it will have been worth the trouble. The piece and the animation are going to be projected on panels in the theatre. In the play the piece gets dissed so as soon as I finished we shot some flicks and they had to throw paint on it. It was hard to watch but as long as I have my flicks that's all that matters. The play runs from Sept 25th-Oct 31st at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre and from Nov 4th-7th at the Lincoln High School Center for the Arts. Tickets are available at www.theoldglobe.org

My friend Pesci from Palm Springs and I have been trying to get together and paint now for a while. We had planned to hook up on a production for the Style-A-Thon last month but we didn't think there was going to be enough wall space to pull off what we had in mind. So a couple of weeks back he told me he would be available to paint on the 28th so I tentatively put it on my schedule. I almost had to sit this one out as I had some back issues early in the week but I felt better by Friday and didn't want to flake out on him. As usual, I didn't take the time to do much planning ahead of time. I left the house early with an unfinished sketch and 3 large duffle bags of paint. We both spent most of the day working on our pieces. Pesci would have ordinarily spent another day on his but since he had to leave town the next day he did what he could to make it look finished. Style-A-Thon 2010

Zone, Daze, and myself were invited to paint at an event being thrown at Writer'z Blok in Southeast San Diego. We were more than happy to accept their invitation and came out to paint, listen to music, and have some BBQ. It was pretty warm but not as hot as it usually is at this time of year which was definitely a good thing. Artists that painted at the event included Haslr, Dyse, Brisk, Vapor, Saratoga Sake, Arest, Brave along with a few others. Pose2 and Chor Boogie also came by to see what was going on and ended up coming back to rock a dope panel too. Much respect to Kutfather who DJ'd for about 5 or 6 hours straight and kept the vibe right. And thanks to the Writer'z Blok and the Jacobs Foundation for providing a venue for us to practice and cultivate our craft.

Seems like everyone had one of these hats on that day. It looked like migrant workers took over the yard.

Outline finally up. Getting started with the fill. Really had no plans color wise. Just brought a lot of paint so I could be ready for whichever color combos we decided to use.

I definitely see a few areas where I strayed from the original outline. The extension on the top of the 'Z' on the left side should be higher. The arrow on the top of the 'Z" is much higher on the wall than it is on the sketch however it doesn't look bad IMO. The extension on the 'E' is curved a little too much on the painted version. And there are a few slices and gills that I forgot to put on the initial outline. I added them a day later but they are still missing from the final photo posted on this post.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this one. I realize there are things I could have tried to kick it up a notch but I made a conscious decision to keep it relatively simple this time in regard to the 3-D and fill designs. I also decided against putting glare lines (highlights) this time just to switch it up a little. I think for now I'll just take this as a win and next time I'll take a few more risks and see where it takes me.

SD Museum of Art Project

Writer'z Blok gave me a call on Monday of this week about doing some painting outside the San Diego Museum of Art on Thursday. A little bit of short notice but fortunately DazeRoc and I have a flexible schedule so we were glad to accept the offer. I wanted to try and draw something up real quick beforehand so I had something from which to work but unfortunately I ran out of time. So I started with a white board and just an idea of doing 1 letter (either 'A' or 'Z') and just trying to do something artsy and colorful which this type of audience might appreciate.

Got my outline up now and basic idea going.

Had to stop for a while because it started raining which is rare around these parts.

We received a lot of positive feedback from the people going in and out of the museum. One lady, who teaches art at a local college, said she enjoyed our work more than the fine art inside the gallery and asked me if I had had any formal training. I told her "some". At least 3 people said that to them it resembled a city and they were describing bridges, roads, and buildings in the design. Once I explained to them that it was actually an abstract letter 'A' they said they could then see it. Probably a good thing because if it just looked like a letter they probably wouldn't have found it quite as interesting. In the end, I'll just be satisfied that they liked it no matter what they saw in it.

This is as far as I got on this day. I could call it finished but they said they wouldn't mind having us back again next week to continue working on our boards. Since we both enjoyed the experience and the opportunity it was an easy decision. I'll be back next week to put some more touches on this and figure out how it's going to end up.

Zone hit me up at the last minute about getting together to get some painting in. Since I wasn't too happy with what I painted up in Eureka, CA at the WST Crew Showcase I was itching to redeem myself. I let Daze know that we were planning to paint and he was in if he was down. The plan was to get there early and knock it out so we could go to the shop and get in a semi-normal work day. As usual, things rarely go as planned and we ended up being there pretty much all day. Or at least Daze and I were. Zone knocked his out in a few hours and had some time to still rock the two characters. As for the coloring, Daze and I pretty much followed Zone's lead. These type of fills usually have me pretty vexed since they don't look like much half way through the process and I don't do them too often but I could see it coming together once I got most of the piece filled in. I did have to eliminate an arrow from the top cause I went a little too big. In the end I was pretty satisfied with the results. The one regret is that we didn't roll the wall all the way to the top.

WST Art Show Photos

So were scheduled to do some live painting for the show. It was super windy and cold but we still what we could. Under any other circumstance I definitely would not have painted in such conditions but people came out to see us work and we didn't want to disappoint. Wasn't real happy with my color selection as no matter what I tried I couldn't get this one to pop. Should've used a darker or lighter color to outline with from the get go. Tried to save it with black glare lines but might have done more harm than help. I'll live to fight another day.

Arest 150 and New English Tees available for Pre-Order

Here are the first two Wild Style Technicians tees we are dropping for 2010.

The first was done by friend of ours who goes by Arest 150. He probably did the artwork about a year ago in a black book and it's taken us a while to digitize the design for printing. We ordered a bunch of colors for this one: Black, Charcoal Grey, Navy Blue, Hunter Green, and Purple. Hunter Green and Purple are being produced in extremely limited quantities (6 pieces each per size) so if one of those interests you we recommend you pre-order. Shout out to our intern Awrek who did a lot of the computer work on this one.

Original Black Book Artwork by Arest 150

The second is a design originally done about 5 years ago by a former employee and friend Nemo 1. We never got around to printing the original version but we had while digging around through files for designs for Spring I pulled up the original file and since I always thought the concept of the design had potential I decided to see if I could straighten it out a little to see if we could use it now. We think it came out well enough to use and so far the feedback has been good.

I got in to drawing realistic portraits in my senior year in high school. Here are a couple that I did a few years later in 1991 from photos I probably got from The Source or a similar magazine. The Humpty drawing was done while I was at work one day during my dead time (which was pretty much the whole day). I can't quite recall when I did the Chuck D drawing but I'm sure it was done within a few months of the other.

I put this together back in 2003 after the first Writer'z Blok event. For those who don't know, Writer'z Blok is an art park in San Diego where graffiti artists can paint legally. They also have events and battles from time to time. Anyway, this video has been sitting on my hard drive for almost 7 years so I figured I'd post it up on youtube so people can see it.

Silver Izze Piece December 2009

I started drawing this outline around 2006 or 2007. Finally got around to finishing it sometime in 2009.

I was asked to paint at an event at Writer'z Blok but I forgot to take my sketches with me to the yard. Luckily, I had the black book image up on my Flickr page so I used their computer to print a copy and painted it. It was raining pretty hard so I did what I could during the event and went back and finished up the following Tuesday with help from DazeRoc who did the green background. The majority of the background including the pink/purple clouds were already there from a previous production by Duer and Robot. I decided to recycle their background as much as possible to try something different and save time.

I bought a frame from Michael's and framed one for myself. I'm going to have to go back and ask them to cut a matte to cover the white on the edges. I have to say it looks better in person though.

Eratic Truth Tattoo design

This is a sketch for a friends sleeve tattoos one of which reads Eratic and the other Truth. This was somewhat challenging because I had to try and make the letters conform to the shape of his forearms. I also wanted to keep it somewhat simple and readable. As for the significance of the two words you'd have to ask the guy who's getting the tattoo.

Tested out some Blubber Magic paint

Aero dropped by the warehouse a couple of weeks back with some of the new Blubber Magic cans. I tested a few out of a small board we had in the shop. Definitely a step up in quality from the previous Blubber paint. The paint is fairly oderless and environmentally friendly and can be used indoors without a mask. It uses a European valve system. I was limited on tips so I couldn't find one that was ideal but I was able to do this with a German Grey Dot. You can order a 12 can mixed color pack of Blubber on our site at

Arts and Culture Festival

I was asked to paint at the www.artsandculturefestival.com I did an "Iz" canvas last year at this event but I don't think most of the people understood or could truly appreciate the piece. This time I wanted to do something that would better fit the theme of the event and that would appeal to the type of person attending. I had a general idea of how I wanted this to look but for the most part I just free styled this. There are a few areas mistakes that I should have fixed in retrospect but I was relatively satisfied with the end result. Especially since I'm not one who does many abstract or real colorful pieces. Lately I've enjoyed trying different styles partially to see if I can pull it off and partially to show the ability to do a wide variety of styles.

WST Dragon tee shirt design

This was a design I did in 2001 for Wild Style Technicians. I created an animated gif so you can get an idea of the steps I go through when making a shirt design. The idea of attaching a dragons head to a piece is something I had done before with my own name in the mid 90's. For this design I purchased a few different dragon tees by other companies to use as reference since drawing dragons isn't something I do too often. The Chinese looking writing actually has a funny story behind it. A couple of customers of ours from Taiwan showed up at our warehouse to pick up an order one day. Before they left we asked them to write "Wild Style" in Chinese script. They talked to each other a little bit in their language then one of them did a script on a piece of paper which we put on our refrigerator door. A couple of months later I was looking at the paper and realized that he had actually spelled "Wild Style" in english that looks like Chinese script. The one on the left reads "Wild" and the one on the right reads "style" both vertically. They must have had a good laugh after they left the warehouse because they had fooled us but I think we got the last laugh cause I reworked it and turned it in to part of my design here.

Here is the piece I painted based on the outline provided by Zone. While Zone's style and my own are related the overall feel is very different. It took me a little longer than usual to get the outline up on this one as there is a lot going on with the connections and I wanted to make it as accurate as possible. I think I did a pretty good job of that on most of the piece but I did start to stretch things out too much towards the end of the 'e'. I started to add the yellow bubbles to the fill as they are on the original sketch but I didn't feel they looked right on the piece (I think they do look good on the sketch) so I went over them.

Ize 16" X 20" Canvas

Recently completed Ize Canvas. I started this one probably two years ago and barely got around to shading the 3D and outlining. Size: 16" x 20" Medium: Aerosol and Acrylic. This type of shading on the 3D with acrylic paint is pretty tedious work and I doubt I will be doing many more with the same style.
